Combination
Mid Taper + Mod Cut
A structured top over a taper rather than a fade — the shape stays sharp but the sides keep enough weight that the whole thing reads as a haircut rather than a statement. The most office-safe combination on the list.

Two decisions, not one.
Sides
Mid Taper
The taper starts higher, around the temple, so you get more shape than a low taper without committing to a fade. A good middle step if you want definition but keep being told fades are too harsh on you.

Mod Cut
Scissor-cut throughout, sitting forward with a defined fringe and length over the ears. No clipper touches it, which is what gives it the softer edge.

Two decisions means two sets of instructions, and the third sentence is usually the one that decides whether they meet in the middle.
- Ask for a mid taper — graduation starting level with the top of the ear, weight kept above it.
- Say the top is a mod cut with a defined fringe line, combed forward and slightly across.
- Ask for the sideburn kept square rather than tapered to a point.
The failure mode.
Every pairing has one specific way it goes wrong, and it is almost always at the join between the two halves rather than in either one of them.
A mod cut wants a clean edge. If your hairline recedes at the temples, ask for the fringe cut with a slight diagonal rather than straight across.
