Pompadour vs Slick Back

Both go backwards with product, so they get asked for as if they were one cut with two names.

Classic

Pompadour

Guard 1-2 · 35-45m · back in 3-4 wks

Serious height at the front, swept back and up, with the volume carried further back than a quiff. The most structured cut here and the one most dependent on how you style it at home.

Slick Back

Guard 0-2 · 30-40m · back in 3-4 wks

All the length combed straight back with no part. Clean, severe, and unforgiving of a receding hairline — it puts the whole forehead on display.

The difference

What actually separates them.

Direction is the same; height is not. A slick back follows the shape of your skull — flat, close, all of the length pulled straight back with nothing built up at the front. A pompadour lifts the front section up before it goes back, so there is a defined volume above the forehead. A slick back can be done at almost any length over about four inches. A pompadour needs the front cut deliberately longer than the crown to have something to build with.

Which one

Pick on upkeep, not on the photo.

Choose the pompadour

You want presence and height, and you have thick enough hair to hold it up.

Choose the slick back

Your hair is fine or straight and will not hold volume, or you want something that takes thirty seconds. It is also the better bet if your hair is long enough that a pompadour would collapse.

Ask for the front left longer than the crown if you want a pompadour. A slick back needs no such instruction, which is why it is the safer order.

What to say

The words for each.

For a pompadour

  1. Ask for a pompadour and say you want the length concentrated at the front.
  2. Ask for at least four inches on top — less will not hold the shape.
  3. Say how tight you want the sides; a fade makes it modern, a taper makes it traditional.

For a slick back

  1. Ask for a slick back and say you want enough length to reach the crown.
  2. Say whether you want the sides faded or kept, which changes it entirely.
  3. Ask for the top left one length so it combs back cleanly.
